The castle
The red sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle sit on the hillside above the town. You can get there by funicular or on foot, and the castle cellar holds an enormous wooden wine barrel.
The Old Bridge
The stone Old Bridge, with its gate and two towers, crosses the Neckar to the other bank. From the bridge you get one of the best views of the castle and the old town.
The Philosophers' Walk
On the other side of the river the Philosophers' Walk climbs through vineyards and gardens. From there you can see all of Heidelberg, perfect for the end of the day.
The university and the Hauptstraße
Heidelberg is home to the oldest university in Germany, and the long pedestrian Hauptstraße runs through the old town, full of cafés and shops.
