Römerberg, the heart of the old town
Start your walk on Römerberg square, surrounded by houses with pointed gables and the Römer building, which served as the town hall for centuries. It is the most photographed spot in the city and looks best early in the morning, before the crowds.
The cathedral and the old town
A few minutes from the square stands St Bartholomew's Cathedral, where German emperors were once crowned. The streets around it are full of small cafés, and the Kleinmarkthalle market hall is a good place to try local specialities.
A walk along the Main
Cross the river on the Eiserner Steg footbridge and carry on along the bank. On the south side there is one museum after another, and the view back to the skyscrapers explains why Frankfurt is nicknamed "Mainhattan".
An evening in Sachsenhausen
End the day in the old Sachsenhausen quarter, known for taverns serving apple wine, the traditional drink of the region, with home-style food.
